Russian Women Marriage – The Traditions And Customs

If you are interested in ‘Russian women marriage’ customs, this article will be of interest. Although Russian weddings have recently become more westernized, there are still a number of cultural traditions that remain in place. For example, it is very rare to see bridesmaids, flower girls or a best man at a Russian wedding.

There is no engagement as such. If a man wants to marry a woman, he simply asks her and that’s it. There is no engagement ring to mark the occasion and only very close family members and friends are informed about the proposal. An honorable man may give his bride-to-be flowers, but this is not obligatory.

The ceremony will be held between one and three months later. It all depends when the Department of Registrations has available dates. The couple will be married by a marriage registrar. A written letter of request has to be submitted to the Department. When this has been received, the couple will be given a list of available dates.

When the couple has made this application, they can be referred to as the groom and bride. There is no big fuss when it comes to planning the wedding ceremony. Items such as flowers, invitations, music, and bridesmaids’ dresses do not feature. The main focus is on the bride’s dress, the rings, the reception, and the bridal car.

The bride and groom will exchange rings at the marriage ceremony. These are chosen by the couple, although the groom has to pay for them. This is a mandatory tradition.

The rings are simple gold wedding bands. There are no ostentatious diamonds or other stones. Married Russians wear wedding bands on their right hands. If you see a Russian wearing a wedding band on the left hand, this signifies that he or she is either divorced or widowed.

The wedding ceremony involves a large fleet of cars. If the couple comes from wealthy stock, large black cars are used. This is considered a symbol of status. Often, there is more than one car for the bride alone. The more cars involved, the prouder the couple and their families are.

The ceremony itself takes place at the Zapis Aktov Grazhdanskogo Sostoyaniya (ZAGS) which is the Department of Registrations. It is known as ‘brakosochetanie’ and is attended only by close friends and family if there are just a few cars. However, if there are extra cars, extra people can attend the ceremony.

The major concern at the reception is to ensure that there is enough liquor. Everybody is expected to get drunk at a Russian wedding reception. If someone passes out due to over-indulgence, no-one is surprised, shocked or embarrassed. Another prerequisite for a successful reception is plenty of food.

Some receptions can continue for two days. The celebration will continue until the alcohol stock is depleted. Sometimes, a reception can carry on for a week. Again, the family will be pleased because this shows that they were able to supply plenty of alcohol.
